Gairal Forest Zone
Dhikala zone boasts of a spectacular wildlife apart from the tranquil forests and is explored through canter safari which takes place twice a day – morning and afternoon. People can also stay overnight in one of the forest rest houses (FRH) located within the zone. A garial forest lodge is a popular option, coming second to the more famous Dhikala forest rest house. Visitors can spend the night in the jungle, experience the wilderness first hand and enjoy jeep safari within the zone.
The Garial forest lodge is lodged deep into the Dhikala zone and is located 13 km from the gate (approximately 40 km from Ramnagar city). It offers a breath-taking view of the banks of Ramganga River. This presents a unique opportunity to see wild animals coming to the bank for either in search of water or a prey. One can easily observe a herd of elephants drinking, bathing or playing in the river water. It is also home to many birds and is a treat for avid birdwatchers.
Though deep inside the jungle, precautions are taken to ensure the safety of the tourists. The compound of Garial forest lodge is protected by solar electric wire which prevents the entry of wild animals inside the premises. Tourists can also see the Corbett museum which is on the way from the entry gate to the FRH.
Being situated amidst the lush green forest of Corbett National Park, Dhikala forest zone is blessed with diversified flora & fauna. It offers a rich variety of flora including 110 species of trees, 27 species of climbers, 51 species of shrubs and 33 species of grass and bamboo.
Apart from flora, Dhikala Forest Zone has splendid diversified fauna. This site creates excellent opportunities for sighting popular species like Spotted deer, Barking deer, Sambhar, Hogg Dears, Elephants, Fox, Monitor Lizard, Royal Bengal Tigers, Leopards, Wild Boar, Langoors, Yellow Throated Martine, Otters, Jackal and many others.
Accommodation in Dhikala Forest Rest House
The accommodation in Gairal forest lodge is comfortable but minimal. Luxuries like air conditioners, TV, fan, telephone and even electricity are unavailable. It is highly recommended for wildlife enthusiasts who wish to take a break from technology. The limited basic amenities that are available are good and in working conditions. There are 3 types of accommodation available at Gairal forest lodge –

- New Forest Rest House – 4 rooms (double beds with attached bathroom)
- Old Forest Rest House – 2 rooms
- Dormitory – 8 beds
The facilities available include:
- Spacious and well-ventilated rooms.
- Attached bathroom with western fittings.
- 24 hrs. running water facility.
- Solar-generated electric light for 2 hours in the evening.
- Solar powered water heating system to provide guests with hot water.
- Dining hall and canteen operated by GMVN provide authentic meals, snacks, and mineral water. (non-vegetarian foods and liquor are not allowed in the FRH)

How to Reach Dhikala Forest Rest House
Gairal forest lodge (GPS location: 29.557985, 79.003550) can be reached by road, the entry is through the Dhangarhi gate of Dhikala zone. The private vehicle/taxi cannot enter the forest area and therefore authorized jeep of Corbett tiger reserve are used to transport tourists to the FRH. Tourists can reach Ramnagar railway station (station code RMR) or can be picked up from Moradabad (60 km), Haridwar (180 km) or Delhi (260 km).

The best time to book a stay in the Gairal forest lodge is from 15th November to 15th June. Due to bad weather, the FRH remains closed for the remaining duration. Since limited accommodation is available, prior booking is recommended. Online advance booking can be done 45 days in advance by Indian tourists and 90 days in advance by foreign nationals. Online booking can be done through the website www.onlinecorbettbooking.com. The charges for one night stay in Gairal forest lodge are INR 6500 per person for Indian nationals and INR 8500 per person for foreign nationals. This tariff is inclusive of the permit, 2 jeep safaris with an expert driver and guide fee, food and other service charges.

Things to remember
Staying deep inside the forest, away from all the hustle bustle of the town brings a calmness which transcends the body and quiets the mind. One feels rejuvenated after such a visit. However, there are certain things that one must remember before going off into the wild.
- Prior booking is essential and no refund is available on cancellation.
- Check-in time is 12 noon and check out time is 10 am.
- ID proof (DL number, PAN card, passport) is essential while booking and on the person while visiting Jim Corbett national park.
